Happy Independence Day to our friends in the Dominican Republic!

This year marks the 172nd year of Dominican Independence, and like every February, it calls for celebration. The month-long party begins with the annual Carnival (Carnaval República Dominicana), and ends with the main event—celebrating Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) on February 27th!

During Carnival, groups in colorful costumes and masks parade through the streets. Depending on the city, you might spot different characters, but popular ones include the Limping Devil (Diablo Cojuelo), Steal the Chicken (Roba la Gallina), and The Indians (Los Indios). If you hear someone shouting poetry in the streets, that’s another popular character, Califé.

Santo Domingo, La Vega, and Santiago are three of the most popular cities to attend Carnival and Independence Day festivities. But even if you’re not in the Dominican Republic, you can still show off your Dominican pride and celebrate here in the United States, like with a traditional Dominican cake or even a manicure with the Dominican flag!

If you’re in Chicago, look for Pangea at the American Dominican Midwest Association’s celebration on Friday, February 26 at the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance. Visit the Association’s Facebook page for more details about the event, which will include a presentation by historian José C. Novas and live entertainment.

It’s also a perfect time to send money to the Dominican Republic with Pangea’s locked-in exchange rates and flat fee.
